Matthew Wright

Matthew is Barbados and the Caribbean's number 1 ranked triathlete and did his first triathlon at 8 years old. He trained at the Loughborough Triathlon Performance Centre at Loughborough University for 5 years, where he also earnt a degree in Sport Science with Management. This was his first experience of high performance triathlon, and had  some success including winning the British Junior Duathlon Championships, multiple British Super Series medals and representing Barbados at his first Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He also raced in the U23 World Championships in Edmonton and Chicago.

 

He graduated in 2015 and decided to move across the Atlantic to Guelph, Canada, to join the Guelph Triathlon Project headed by former Triathlon Canada High Performance coach Craig Taylor. Matthew was in Canada for 3 years, gaining his 1st two World Cup top 10's as well representing Barbados at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, and also the Central America and Caribbean Games in Columbia. 

 

Matthew moved back to the UK at the end of 2018 and is now based in Cardiff training at the National Triathlon Performance Centre Wales under coach Luke Watson, who happened to be his training partner while in Loughborough 5 years ago. All focus is currently on attempting to qualify Barbados a spot on the startline at Tokyo 2020.
